House Kleynhans
1990-1991)
This was our first house. Jan was still in the army at the time when his god-parents asked him to design their retirement house in Bloemfontein. The site is a panhandle and forced a linear plan to allow the living areas and bedrooms northern sun. Clues from the Post Modern era are still evident in the use of materials: sandstone plinth and red face brick with a corrugated iron roof. The large existing trees became part of the design where the big elm tree penetrates the roof. Due to the fact that it became a corridor house, the light was allowed in to create an interesting atmosphere in the house. The entrance meets the visitor at an angle from the parking in front of the garages.
This early house is a testimony to the practice's desire to work close with nature in their architecture.
