Pre-Primary School and Crèche
University of the Free State
The school's overall layout provided for three linear blocks (administration, crèche and senior group) enclosing a courtyard allowing north orientation to all functions except for the storage facilities (south). The spatial cohesiveness of the complex was conceptually achieved by creating a small village with a town square (courtyard) as the datum of the design where the roof is held up by playful groups of "dancing" steel columns. The entrance access is also located in this space. The appropriate scale for children, contextual nuances and playful appearance, provide the building with an identity and strong presence on the campus of the University of the Free State.
