House Enkalweni

Rayton, Bloemfontein

2005-2006

Photographs: David Ross (VISI), Jan Smit, Bernard Viljoen

A house designed for an engineer and doctor with a view towards the Free State Botanical Gardens. The concept of the house was to separate the public from the private bedrooms. One arrives from the south (back) in a void between these two areas. This view is framed by a bridge connecting the two arts of the house. A circulation spine separates the northern living/sleeping areas from the southern service areas- the latter clad in corrugated iron expressing the ordinary function thereof.

The stone silo serves as a hinge to organize one towards the entrance but also reflects the surrounding grain silos in the landscape.
