House Uys

Rayton, Bloemfontein

2005-2006

Photographs: David Ross (VISI), Jan Smit

This house and studio for a graphic designer and writer form part of a trilogy of houses (see Smit and Enkalweni) that can be seen as case studies interpreting Free State sheds as contemporary houses. This one experiments with a steel structure with infill walls. The butterfly roof is a three-dimensional expression of the two-dimensional organization of the plan: living and bedroom spaces north under the larger roof and the services (bathrooms, kitchen) under the smaller part (clad in corrugated iron). The red face brick tube entrance divides the public form the private zones of the house.
